Salt Ship Design is an independent ship design company delivering tailor-made ship designs to clients worldwide.

We design a wide range of vessel types for the energy, seafood, merchant and navy sectors, with a strong focus on decarbonization.

We are measured on the success of our designs in operation, and so far more than 100 ships have been ordered from shipyards worldwide based on our designs.

We are seeking a Design Manager to join our project development team in Leirvik.

As Design Manager you hold the conceptual responsibility for the vessel.

Working in close collaboration with a Project Manager, you take the concept from the first idea to a shipbuilding contract, supporting engineering through vessel construction and shipowner when the vessel enters operation.

You are responsible for the overall functionality, capacities and performance of the delivered vessel, in accordance with the Design Basis and Building Specification.

The role calls for someone who sees the whole picture.

You combine operational needs, technical solutions, regulations and cost into one coherent concept, and you are able to dive into the technical details when needed.

Key responsibilities
  • Together with the project manager, drive progress towards a ship design contract with attractive scope and terms, and build long-term client relationships

  • Develop and own the concept design through the general arrangement plan (GA)

  • Contribute in the preparation and updating of the Design Basis, and ensure a common understanding of it among all parties, internal and external

  • Plan, coordinate and head the initial design phase: define tasks for our discipline specialists, and keep the overall picture.

  • Involve other Design Managers for advice and QA

  • Evaluate trade-offs between capacity, efficiency, safety, operability and cost, and integrate the specialists' results into one coherent design

  • Ensure designs meet class rules, regulatory requirements and client specifications

  • Support the engineering and operational phases to ensure continuity and a common understanding of the Design Basis

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes, tools and standards, including 3D and automation in early design

Qualifications
  • MSc or BSc in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering, or equivalent

  • Broad understanding of ship design

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • A passion for ship design and a genuine interest in ship operations and how design choices affect performance at sea

  • Ability to think holistically and translate technical analysis into practical design decisions

  • Good communication skills in English

  • We welcome both recent graduates and experienced candidates.

What we offer
  • An excellent working environment with helpful, engaged colleagues who share their knowledge and support each other

  • A leading ship design environment, where you work with some of the industry's most experienced designers

  • Challenging and varied projects across multiple vessel segments, for leading clients

  • A central role with real influence on the vessels we design

  • Modern tools and office facilities in Leirvik, Stord
