About the position

The Department of Electric Energy (IEL) at NTNU has a vacancy for a full-time permanent researcher position. You will join the research group High Voltage Technology (HTV) at IEL, where we foster an open, inclusive, and collaborative working environment. We are seeking a candidate with strong expertise in high voltage engineering, hands-on laboratory experience, and a proven ability to contribute to both experimental work and research development within an active academic environment.

The position is central to the continued development of the HVT group’s laboratory activities and research portfolio. The successful candidate is expected to combine practical laboratory responsibility with active participation in research and project development, while supporting student-driven experimental work.

Our work environment is defined by a friendly, supportive atmosphere, with regular gatherings such as professional meetings within the research group, weekly colloquia, shared lunches, and “Friday coffee” sessions to end the week. These formal and informal events offer opportunities to share ideas, celebrate milestones, and build relationships.

The main workplace will be in Trondheim.

Your immediate leader is the Head of Research Group.

Duties of the position

• Act as laboratory responsible for the HVT group’s laboratories, ensuring reliable and safe operation
• Support and guide PhD candidates and MSc students in planning and conducting experimental work
• Contribute to the design, execution, and evaluation of laboratory experiments
• Take part in and initiate research activities within high voltage and high current technologies
• Prepare and contribute to applications for externally funded research projects
• Maintain and further develop laboratory infrastructure, measurement systems, and procedures
• Contribute to a collaborative research environment within the group

Required selection criteria

• PhD in High Voltage Technology or a closely related field
• Experience from experimental work in high voltage laboratories
• Practical experience with high current systems and testing environments
• Solid understanding of measurement techniques, instrumentation, and laboratory safety practices
• Experience contributing to research activities and scientific publications
• You must have English language skills, both written and spoken, corresponding to the scale B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Applicants who are not native English speakers are encouraged to document their English language proficiency. This can be done through an approved English language test. One of the following test scores could be documented for this purpose:
  • TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) - Score equivalent to the B2 level: 79 - 101.
  • IELTS - Score equivalent to the B2 level: 5.5 - 6.0
  • Cambridge English - Score equivalent to the B2 level: 160 - 179.

Preferred selection criteria

• Demonstrated experience supporting student experimental work and laboratory activities
• Familiarity with day-to-day laboratory operation and coordination in a research setting
• Experience with research proposal development and funding applications
• Proficiency in Norwegian at a minimum B2 level

Salary and conditions

As a researcher (code 1109) you are normally paid from gross NOK 600 000 – NOK 750 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.   

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

• A description of the scientific/artistic works you consider most relevant, which you particularly wish to be factored into the assessment
• A complete publication list
• You are encouraged to include documentation of English language proficiency if you are not a native speaker of English
• Names and contact information for three relevant referees

It is important that you both document and reflect on your competence. You are encouraged to use the NTNUs competence matrix as a guide for  documentation of your competence.

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions. 

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Open scientific practice will be recognized.

NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA and The obligations in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment ( CoARA) on responsible assessment of research and recognition of a wider range of academic contributions to science and society. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
