<h2>About the position</h2>Position as PhD Research Fellow is available at the Department of Technology Systems (ITS) as a part of the European ATLAST2 Project.The project is a concept for a next generation 50-meter class single-dish astronomical observatory operating at sub-millimeter and millimeter wavelengths, run as a facility telescope by an international partnership and powered by renewable energy.Starting date no later than October 1, 2025.  The fellowship period is three years.A fourth year maybe considered and it will involve 25 percent of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.  <h2>Job description</h2>The person hired in the position will work on theoretical control and optimization methods for a grid island powered by renewable energy, supporting both the ATLAST telescope and the nearby community of San Pedro de Atacama.The PhD candidate will have the unique opportunity to shape the renewable energy management system by developing novel real-time control &amp; optimization algorithms. Pilot demonstrations on partner radio telescope facilities such as APEX and the Sardinia Radio Telescope may be possible, depending on the interest of the PhD candidate and availability of the pilot sites.The core activity of the ATLAST2 shall support Researchers, PhD candidates and Postdocs. They work in close contact with the research and user partners of ATLAST2, and with other partners at ITS on the general topics of renewable energy systems. The PhD candidate will work on a team at ITS comprising two other positions funded by ATLAST2, alongside Assoc. Profs. Mathias Hudoba de Badyn and Marianne Zeyringer, as well as Prof. Sabrina Sartori. <h2>Qualification requirements</h2>The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation.
