<h2>About the position</h2>Position as PhD Research Fellow in Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence for Planetary Ground Penetrating Radar available at Centre for Space Sensors and Systems (CENSSS) at the Department of Technology Systems (ITS).Starting date no later than November 1, 2025. The fellowship period is three years.A fourth year maybe considered and it will involve 25 percent of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.  <h2>Job description</h2>The PhD fellow will be part of the RIMFAX team on the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission. RIMFAX is a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and one of seven scientific instruments aboard the Perseverance rover. The RIMFAX Science team is an international team with participants from institutions in both US and Europe, see:  <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/mars-2020%20perseverance/science-instruments/" rel="nofollow">https://science.nasa.gov/mission/mars-2020 perseverance/science-instruments/.</a>The main goal of the RIMFAX experiment is to study the environmental and geological history of Mars at the Perseverance landing site in Jezero crater.  The PhD research work will include one or more of the following topics and tasks:<ul><li>Machine learning/Artificial Intelligence methods for automatic interpretation/classification of the RIMFAX radar images.</li><li>Retrieval of geophysical parameters, such as dielectric properties, from RIMFAX data.</li><li>Dissemination through scientific publications.</li></ul> <h2>What skills are important in this role?</h2>The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation.
