<h2>About the job</h2>3 fully-funded PhD fellowships in social anthropology are available at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo. 2 of the positions will be dual degree fellowships between the University of Oslo and Makerere University. 1 position will possibly be a joint degree with the University in Cape Town. If not, it will be a single degree position at the University of Oslo with joint supervision and secondment at the University of Cape Town. This will be decided before we conduct interviews for the positions. For the positions, moving to Norway is required and residence in or close by Oslo city is expected. The appointed candidates will work within the collaborative EU funded doctoral training network HEALENAE: Health and Environment in Africa and Europe. The network will consist of 15 PhDs, that together will work and learn as an international cohort and collaborate across projects to bring together insights anchored in different sectors and countries.  The candidates will conduct fieldwork in Africa and/or Europe, participate in annual training schools and writing retreats, and complete a 6 month stay with the secondary university (in the case of the positions below, at Makerere University, Uganda and University of Cape Town, South Africa). More information about the network can be found <a href="https://healenae.eu/" rel="nofollow">here</a>.  The PhD fellows will automatically be admitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences&#39; PhD programme at the University of Oslo (UiO).  The fellows will be supervised by professors at the Departments of Social Anthropology and of Health and Society. The two dual degree candidates will also be admitted to the doctoral programme of Makerere University (MU). In case of a joint degree, the third candidate will be admitted to the University of Cape Town (UCT as well as the University of Oslo).  Separate registration processes for these universities will apply.  <h2>More about the positions</h2>The appointed candidates will work within the framework of the project on one of the following areas: <ul><li>Metabolic impact: agricultural intensification and health transformations (UiO and UCT)</li><li>Infrastructures of toxic evidence and civic protection (UiO and MU)</li><li>Epidemics and natural disasters as ‘business’ (UiO and MU)</li></ul>Read more about the areas here: <a href="https://healenae.eu/phd-calls" rel="nofollow">https://healenae.eu/phd-calls</a> The candidate must develop a project description, which should be submitted as a part of the application. The description should show how the candidate’s project will contribute to the specific area within the HEALENAE network. See more about the requirements for the project description below.  The appointment is for a duration of 3 years, and all three candidates are expected to take part in the PhD programmes as described above and to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The successful candidates must be available to start by 1 September 2026.Note that applicants can be of any nationality. However, the candidate cannot have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies etc.) in Norway for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date and must not hold a PhD. <h2>Selection criteria </h2>The successful candidate must have:<ul><li>Education equivalent to five years at university level in Norway, with two years (120 ECTS) at master’s level in social anthropology. Master’s degrees in closely related disciplines may be considered. The master’s degree must have been obtained by the time of application.</li><li>An average grade of A or B (ECTS scale) or equivalent in the master’s degree or 70 % and above in percent-based grading systems. The master’s thesis must have been awarded an A or B, or equivalent result.</li><li>Minimum 3 months of ethnographic fieldwork experience.</li><li>Demonstrable capacity to complete writing projects within deadlines</li><li>Willingness to conduct long-term ethnographic fieldwork</li><li>Willingness to work interdisciplinarily, across borders and institutions, and as part of a larger team</li><li>Personal suitability and motivation for the position</li></ul> <ul><li>Excellent command of English (oral and written).
