This PhD position is part of the Dependency-Aware Performance Analysis (DAPA) project which builds on our prior work on instruction-level performance analysis for out-of-order processors (featured at <a href="https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3466752.3480058" rel="nofollow">MICRO’21</a>, <a href="https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3579371.3589058" rel="nofollow">ISCA’23</a>, and <a href="https://jahre.folk.ntnu.no/papers/dip-asplos26-aam.pdf" rel="nofollow">ASPLOS’26</a>). These works produce various types of per-instruction cycle stacks that explain what an application spends time on and why. Although this is clearly useful for developers and computer architects, they also need to reason about the impact of potential optimizations to avoid wasting time on implementing optimizations that ultimately do not improve performance. We believe that such analyses can be enabled by also accounting for inter-instruction dependencies – and the focus of this PhD project is to understand exactly how to do that.</p><p>Your immediate leader will be the Head of the Computing Unit.</p><br /><h2>About the project</h2><p>The DAPA project is funded by the Research Council of Norway, started on January 1, 2026, and will continue until the end of 2031. This announcement covers the first of DAPA’s two PhD positions. DAPA is affiliated with the <a href="https://www.ntnu.edu/nice" rel="nofollow">Norwegian Center for Intelligent Computers and Electronics (NICE)</a>. NICE is a center for research-driven innovation (i.e., an <a href="https://www.forskningsradet.no/en/financing/what/sfi/" rel="nofollow">SFI</a>) in which NTNU, the University of Oslo, and key industry players work together towards developing the knowledge and technology required to move key AI applications from Cloud datacenters to Edge devices. Through NICE, the DAPA PhD students are part of an exciting research and innovation environment.</p><br /><h2>Duties of the position</h2><ul><li>Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate</li><li>Carry out research of good quality within the framework described above</li><li>Academic publications and popular science dissemination</li><li>Participate in the activities of the CAL research group and the SFI NICE research center</li><li>Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational institutions</li></ul><p>Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.</p><br /><h2>Required selection criteria</h2><ul><li>Strong theoretical background in computer architecture.</li><li>Documented experience with the development of computer hardware, for example, through simulation-based studies or prototyping at the Register-Transfer Level.</li><li>You must have a relevant Master&#39;s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master&#39;s level. Master students can apply, but the master&#39;s degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position and no later than October 1, 2026.</li><li>You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master&#39;s degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to <a href="https://i.ntnu.no/wiki/-/wiki/English/Grading&#43;scale" rel="nofollow">NTNU&#39;s grading scale</a>, and a C or better from your bachelor’s degree. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. </p><p>The employment period is 3 years for the doctoral work.
